When you enter our practice for your initial cleaning appointment you will begin to see we are not a typical dental office. We are concerned with your overall health and how it relates to your oral health. And since most dental problems, such as cavities, can progress exponentially over a several month period of time, we usually will recommend re-care appointments of every six months. You can expect your initial appointment to be about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

We will begin your appointment by reviewing your past and present medical history, reviewing all medications you are taking, and we will take your blood pressure. We will review your past dental history and learn of your past dental experiences. We will want to know your concerns for your mouth and what are your expectations of us.

  • We will then perform your oral exam; we will check for periodontal disease, dental disease, cavities, and we will perform an oral cancer exam.
  • We will take radiographs of your teeth as this is the only way to check for cavities between teeth, verify periodontal breakdown, and look for dental abscesses and pathosis of the bone.
  • We will also take intraoral photographs of your teeth so you may view them on a large monitor. We feel a picture is worth a thousand words, and these photos of your teeth will help you understand what is going on inside your mouth.
  • We will then perform a thorough cleaning using the latest in ultrasonics, piezo and sodium bicarbonate stain removal.
  • We will review your brushing and flossing techniques and educate you in the latest that dentistry has to offer.
  • We will review any findings and explain treatment options if treatment is necessary. We will be thorough and we believe that if we educate you on your mouth and what dentistry has to offer you can make the best decisions for yourself.
  • We will provide you with headphones and music or video glasses and movies if you need to help you relax.
  • We will also give you a new highest quality toothbrush, glide dental floss, tongue cleanser (scraper), sample toothpaste, and any other materials necessary along with any literature you will need for any particular questions you may have.
  • We will help you with future appointments, your insurance, and do anything necessary to make your visits as pleasant and comfortable as possible.

Now you can see if you are looking for a quick cleaning and check-up, then we are not the dental practice for you.

We will be available to our patients 24 hours for all emergencies which may develop, and you will always have access to speaking to Dr. Cerniglia or his hygienist, Kelli, whenever you need.
