Recent studies have shown that people with gum disease tend to develop heart disease almost twice as frequent as those without. With another study showing that 7 out every 8 Americans adults have some form of periodontal disease, we have made a firm commitment to detecting and eliminating gum disease amongst our patients.

What can be done?

During your comprehensive periodontal exam, we will check the color, shape and consistency of your gums. We will look for areas of inflammation, bleeding, or loss of the attachment between gums and teeth. We will use a periodontal probe to check for any early or advanced bone loss. We may x-ray the bone structure under your gums to check for deterioration caused by periodontal disease.

The next step is to treat any existing disease by removing calculus (tartar) and plaque deposits from the depth of the pockets, smoothing and polishing root surfaces, and removing diseased gum tissue.

We will also show you how to take care of your gums at home to minimize the risk of gum disease. We will set up a program of continuing periodontal evaluation (or treatment, if necessary) that will be tailored to your specific needs.

We'll give you the necessary means to accomplish this (quality toothbrush, toothpaste, glide floss, floss threaders and proxybrushes), and instruct you in their use.
